When you decide that you want to have your liposuction procedure, you will be scheduled for a pre-operative visit.  All of your questions will be answered so that you will no what to expect before, during and after your liposuction surgery.

Will I need any testing before my liposuction procedure?
Dr. Serrao will perform a history and physical examination at the pre-operative visit.  Photos and mesurements will also be taken.  Routine blood work will  be ordered and an EKG may be done dependent on your age and general health. These are all necessary to ensure patient safety and are the standard of care for any surgical procedure.

Will I need any sedation for my liposuction surgery?
For the majority of patients, liposuction is performed under local anesthesia, limiting the medical risk associated with general anesthesia.  When you arrive to our surgical center and are prepared for your liposuction, a mild sedative will be given to you to ensure your comfort throughout the procedure.  Most patients experience minimal discomfort and find the liposuction procedure very tolerable.

What can I expect before the liposuction procedure begins?
Before the procedure begins,  your skin will be marked to indicate the areas that you wish to have treated.  You will then be taken into our surgical suite where a skin cleansing prep will be given.  Then, your skin will be numbed so that a tiny incision can be made to create access to the fat layer.  Numbing fluid will be infused through this incision and time will be given to allow proper absorption into the fat layers.  Most patients describe this as a “weird,” but not painful, sensation. 

What can I expect during my liposuction procedure?
After the tumescent or numbing part of the procedure is done, the liposuction procedure will begin.  The steps to this process are dependent on the type of liposuction procedure that you are having.  These steps can be found by visiting the procedure page on this website.  Your vital signs will be monitored and your safety is of the utmost importance.  During the procedure some patients sleep, while others talk to Dr. Serrao and Larissa the entire time.   Whatever you preference, we will be there for you!

How long does the liposuction procedure take?
At our practice we never rush and we take our time with you.  The amount of time is dependent on the procedure performed, the number of areas being treated, and if a Natural Fat Transfer is being done.  On average, procedures may last anywhere from two to four hours.  During your consultation, Dr. Serrao will let you know the amount of time needed for your individual surgery.   Patients are usually discharged within one hour after the procedure is completed.

When can I return to my normal activities after liposuction?
We generally recommend that you take it easy the day of your procedure.  Since a mild sedative is given, you will need someone to drive you to the office for the surgery and to take you home when it is completed.  To ensure your safety, we recommend that you are not home alone for the first 24 hours.  Most patients will return to work in a day or two and feel fine the next morning.
