What is Tumescent Liposuction and How Is It Performed?
Tumescent Liposuction surgery is mainly performed under local anesthesia (loss of sensation without loss of consciousness) by the tumescent, or wet, technique.  Tumescent refers to a technique that uses large volumes of a special diluted local anesthetic that is injected into the fat prior to the surgery, which causes the targeted areas to swell and become tumescent or firm for the surgeon to access the areas with more ease and while the patient is awake. Once the area is anesthtized, the fat will be remove and the body will be contoured by suction. Local anesthesia is widely regarded as the safest form of anesthesia. Because local anesthesia is long-lasting and persists for many hours, there is a highly reduced need for narcotics or pain medications post-surgery.

How Long Will I Be In Surgery For Tumescent Liposuction?  
The length of time required to perform the Tumescent Liposuction surgery varies with the amount of fat that is to be removed and the number of areas to be treated. Most Tumescent Liposuction surgeries take from 30 minutes up to 2 hours, but extensive procedures can take longer. The length of time required also varies with the manner in which the anesthetic is injected. In some cases, Dr. Serrao  may divide the treatment into different stages if the patient desires to have multiple areas treated. For example, Dr. Serrao may treat the hips, thighs and abdomen on the   first session, and treat the arms, neck and chin on a second session.

What is the Recovery Period for Tumescent Liposuction surgery?
Time off work is very minimal. Imagine having liposuction surgery one day, and returning to near normal activities almost immediately. Sometimes people return to work the next day because of the reduced trauma to the tissues that these technologies deliver.  You will need to wear a compression garment for about four weeks, it may be removed for a short period after 24 hours so that you may shower.  This garment is nescessary to promote lymphatic drainage, thus improving circulation to the tissue, reducing swelling, and promotes good healing. The procedures have minimal downtime and deliver great results.
